2009 Young Artist Competition
  • Young people who are in pursuit of a serious career are given an opportunity to be auditioned by distinguished judges.
  • Winners, in addition to being awarded cash prizes, perform at the Hewlett - Woodmere Library.
  • First prize winners have the opportunity to appear on Robert Sherman's WQXR .McGraw-Hill Young Artists Showcase
  • Contributions for the cash prizes are donated by the public.
  • Auditions are usually held during February and March.
  • Prizes are awarded in four categories: piano, strings, woodwinds and brass, voice: First Prize = $750, Second Prize = $300, third Prize = $150
  • No prize will be given in a particular category if, in the opinion of the judges, the performance level is not sufficiently high quality.
  • Instrumental and Voice prize winners will receive $75 for an accompanist.

Competition Age Requirements
  • Vocalists - between 18 and 26 by February 15 of the year of the competition
  • Instrumentalists - between13 and 18 by February 15 of the year of the competition
  • All contestants must submit a photocopy of their birth certificate.

Performance Requirements
  • Pianists: From memory, two contrasting works from baroque or classical period and one from the romantic or modern/contemporary period. No concerti permitted. Finalists only may prepare a third composition of their own choosing.
  • Vocalists: From memory, an aria from an opera or oratorio and two art songs of different languages and styles.
  • Strings, Woodwinds, Brass: two contrasting works: one from baroque or classical period and one from the romantic/contemporary period. One movement of a concerto or sonata is acceptable in either category

Applicants should fill out the following application form, signed by the teacher. Please include a $25 registration fee and a photocopy of the birth certificate and mail all three by January 11, 2011 to:

Saturday, March   7, 2009  Piano   (Snow dates will be Saturday April 11 & 18 , 2009)
Saturday, March 14, 2009  Voice
Saturday, March 21, 2009  Strings
Saturday, March 28, 2009  Winds & Brass
Sunday,   April    4,  2009  Piano Finals
