2011 Young Artist Competition
  • Audition for the 32nd Young Artists Competition of the Friday Woodmere Music Club of Long Island will be held from Saturday, March 5 through Saturday, April2, 2011.
  • The purpose of these auditions is to give the young musicians planning a professional career in classical music an opportunity to be heard by eminent judges.
  • Contributions for the cash prizes are donated by the public.
  • Prizes are awarded in four categories: piano, strings, woodwinds and brass, voice: First Prize = $750, Second Prize = $300, third Prize = $150
  • No prize will be given in a particular category if, in the opinion of the judges, the performance level is not sufficiently high quality.
  • Instrumental and Voice prize winners will receive $75 for an accompanist.
  • Winners, in addition to being awarded cash prizes, perform at the Hewlett - Woodmere Library. on Sunday, June 5, 2011.
  • First prize winners have the opportunity to appear on Robert Sherman's WQXR .McGraw-Hill Young Artists Showcase

Competition Age Requirements
  • Vocalists - between 18 and 26 by February 15 of 2011
  • Instrumentalists - between13 and 18 by February 15 of the year of the competition
  • All contestants must submit a photocopy of their birth certificate.

Performance Requirements
  • Pianists: From memory, two contrasting works from baroque or classical period and one from the romantic or modern/contemporary period. No concerti permitted. Finalists only may prepare a third composition of their own choosing.
  • Vocalists: From memory, an aria from an opera or oratorio and two art songs of different languages and styles.
  • Strings, Woodwinds, Brass: two contrasting works: one from baroque or classical period and one from the romantic/contemporary period. One movement of a concerto or sonata is acceptable in either category

Applicants should fill out the following application form, signed by the teacher. Please include a $25 registration fee and a photocopy of the birth certificate and mail all three items by February 13, 2011 to:

Saturday, March   5, 2011  Wind & Brass 
Saturday, March 12, 2011  Voice (Snow dates will be Saturday April 9 , 2011)
Saturday, March 19, 2011  Piano Preliminary
Saturday, March 26, 2011  Strings
Saturday, April   2,  2011 Piano Finals

Audition times will be assigned. Contestants needing an accompanist must bring their own. Additional  applications may be obtained by sending a self-addressed stamped envelop to Mrs. Louise Masi. or download it from the website. For further information, phone Louise Masi:(516) 221-4680
